The Pink City of Jaipur – An architectural portfolio : Part I

IMG_4398-headerThe pink city of Jaipur is unique in that it is the only pre-modern Indian city that was built according to a master plan, in one go. The walled city of Jaipur still retains the distinct architectural character imparted by its unique heritage, and it still is a photographer’s dream come true.

Over the years I have often spent innumerable hours walking along the streets of the pink city, camera in hand, attempting to capture its essence. The images displayed in these architectural portfolios were clicked during those long walks in the streets of Jaipur.

This is the first part of “The Pink City of Jaipur – An architectural portfolio”.

  1. Somie – so true. Having been there recently…. the inner city is something that still retains its charms and holds fort to the onslaught of ‘development’.

I would neve have recognised Jaipur…. if not for the walled city.

    Nice pics!

  2. somendra! It feels really nice to see these pictures here.

Its feels sad to see apathy amongst the locals when it come to local architecture, monuments and heritage, in general.People don’t understand the value of heritage. While the world over, heritage seems to be a great money spinner, out here people just want to destroy it for personal gains or to move with times!!

It seems each of us is in mad rush, running after materialistic stuff. Add to this, the modern culture which is geared towards eliminating uniqueness (in culture, food, clothes etc) for increasing its own market. Looking at the architecture and monuments in the old part of city surely proves that the rulers of Jaipur had an eye for aesthetic sense. I would go on to say that it is this architecture that surely makes the city quite unique.

thanks for bringing it out and posting here!

    1. Restlesswanderer you are so right. We as a society do need to wake up before all is lost.
